The rails for the canvas frame are built up from two components. First component is 1x3 pine dressed lumbar. The second component is a beveled 3/4 in section that is a 1x3 ripped in half and then and edge is beveled to 8 degrees on the table saw. The image shows the top edge bevel. When built up with the 1x3 the bevel is positioned on the outside edge and keeps the canvas floating above the remain
Buildup of canvas frame rails
The beveled component and the 1x3 pine rail are glued and brad nailed together taking care to keep the higher beveled edge on the outside to raise the canvas away from the canvas frame.
The composite rail is mitre cut with the bevel component on the outside. To ensure squareness, opposite rails should be the same length.
The corners are held in a jig and glued, screwed (with pre-drilling as shown here) and doubly secured with brad nails. Once the glue has setup, the whole construct is quite strong.
